You know, for the longest time I didn't want children. Truth be told, I didn't particularly like kids. They're cute and small, but they're also grubby and their noses run all the time. They're covered in wicked, potent germs that are capable of bringing adults to their knees for weeks on end. The Husband didn't want children either, but apparently two negatives really DO make a positive.
As it turns out, I like my own kid just fine. Sure, she's grubby and her nose runs all the time and she brings home wicked, potent germs that have brought The Husband and I to our knees for weeks on end, but she gives hugs and kisses that can't be beat and she cracks us up several times a day.
Today we took her to the CNE, a place our childless couple selves would have referred to as a "kid infested slice of hell," but if you want to see the joy on your kid's face as a goat licks food off her hand, you have to endure it. As expected, kids were everywhere and while we were there I came to an important realization.
I still don't like other people's children very much.

That's understandable. I always thought I didn't like kids either until I had my own. Good post.
Sometimes other people's children are hard to like. For the most part, I do love children--but from afar--you know from the other side of the plexi-glass window in the observation room?? LOLOL!! However--I do have 5 children of my own--and I've learned to grow my heart and love them deeply and I've also learned *cough-ahem* to tolerate their friends--mostly. There are a few neighborhood kids I've had to ban from our premises. Makes you wonder about what their parents are thinking :( That said--I'm getting better about liking those other children. He-He.
Cheers, Jenn.
Ha! My post was from a similar angle. It is truly understandable. Another reason that I believe that NO ONE can love my daughter like I can. ;)
I wanted kids as long as I could remember, even when I realized I really didn't like most of them. Like you, I discovered that my own are beautiful geniuses, but other people's--not so much. : - )
I know exactly how you feel. I wanted to be an elementary school teacher until the day I realized that I don't much like kids!! I like mine just fine...I just don't want anything to do with most others :)
Love it! My husband mentioned the other day that he thinks babies are maybe okay. Until they learn how to move on their own, and as long as he doesn't have to change diapers. And that he doesn't know what to do with kids after they start moving until they're about 10. So I asked if he liked teenagers. He said no. So.... hmm... he likes kids how?
The picture is so cute :)
Other people's kids can be admired in small doses, I suppose...but then again, aren't we all OTHER PEOPLE'S KIDS? lmbo because
I crack myself up!
Loved this post! I agree, I've never really cared for other people's children. For the most part, I don't care for other children's parents. Lol But I do know a select group that I could see myself planning playdates with in the future. :)
I only like other people's kids if they get along with, and behave like, my own kids. In that case (it's been twice so far in almost 6 years) I'll like someone else's kid ;)
Good post, I love the honesty. And that pic is so cute. I think the Parasite will speak kindly about you and Husband later in life. :-)
Whew, it's ok not to like other people's children. Thank you for validating me, lol.
That is a relief!! I love my own kids, but just have little use or patience for anyone else's. I have no problem knowing how to act around my own, but other peoples? They are a whole different beast. Yikes!! Fortunately my kids seem to be just like me and their school friends stay at school and I rarely have to deal with them. As of yet, my home has been my sanctuary and very rarely have there ever been strange kids in my midst. LOL Great post. Makes me feel a little less weird.

Thanks all! I knew I was completely normal... some of the time.
@Jenn, by the time The Parasite is old enough to bring friends home I hope I get over it. But probably not.
@Angela, yes I am raising the most perfect specimen of humanity EVER! We'll ignore the fact that she was a total little shit tonight!
@Steven, @Kathy - Perfectly normal to not know what to do with the others. At least I think it is. Do with that information what you will...
That gave me a good laugh
I own a small daycare, so I'm officially going to say that I ALWAYS love other people's kids.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;O)
My mom doesn't like kids, and my sisters and I don't like kids. But that works out pretty well.
